10 Most Popular Songs to Play at a Wedding

You've picked out your dress, and selected your centrepieces. All that's left is the music. A wedding isn't a wedding without dancing, and you need a playlist that covers everything from that romantic first dance to a singles-only dance off. We've scoured the iPods of everyone on the Hitchbird team and came up with ten best wedding songs to pump up the party.

1. THINKING OUT LOUD by Ed Sheeran

This sweet ballad is perfect for a newlyweds' first dance. Not only does the music video itself feature Sheeran doing some pretty cool aerobatic dance moves, but it's slow, romantic, and talks about loving someone until they're old and grey. It’s pretty much the musical equivalent of wedding vows.

2. CAN I HAVE THIS DANCE from High School Musical 3

Another candidate for a first dance is the infamous scene where Gabriella teaches Troy how to dance on a schoolyard roof. We're not entirely sure why they were allowed up there, but the song is so sweet and adorable, we honestly don't care. #RelationshipGoals.

3. A THOUSAND YEARS by Christina Perri

Whether you love Twilight or hate it, you can't deny the franchise spawned some amazing music. From Breaking Dawn Part One, this piano ballad speaks of loving someone before they've met - and loving them long after.

4. MARRY YOU by Bruno Mars

A fun-filled Vegas weekend turned wedding. Marriage is romantic, but it's also supposed to be fun! Keep those drinks flowing and get down with your best friend and lover on the dance floor.

Love means loving someone inside and out, even their imperfections. Lean your head on your husband's shoulder as Legend croons how his lady love drives him crazy - but he wouldn't have it any other way.

There's a reason why this hit spent weeks at the top of the Billboard charts, it's undeniably catchy. On your happiest day that is your wedding, it's only appropriate to clap along with the song that literally uses the word happy in the title.

7. WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL by One Direction

We all fell in love with the British boy band the second they appeared on the X Factor. Their very first single is infectious with punchy lyrics that reminded everyone they're drop-dead gorgeous no matter what their insecurities think.

8. UPTOWN FUNK by Mark Ronson

The cake's been cut, and the vows have been exchanged. It's time to move onto the party section of the wedding. Uptown Funk is pure, unadulterated fun and your guests won't be able to stop themselves from chanting along: "Uptown funk gonna give it to ya!"

9. TIME AFTER TIME by Cyndi Lauper

"When you fall, I will catch you," is honestly the best mantra for marriages. Couples fight, talk it out and forgive – ensuring that you and your partner make it through. You have each other's backs through thick and thin and that's all that matters.

10. SHAKE IT OFF by Taylor Swift

In an interview, Swift said she wrote this song specifically to be played at weddings. The last song for wallflowers that are finally, finally convinced by their friends to get up and dance. Featuring horns and the former country princess at her pop best, it reminds listeners that “haters gonna hate”, so you might as well move those feet like no one's watching.
