The 5-Star Hotel Born out of a Make-Believe University
There was once a prestigious university in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, which taught the children of wealthy locals and colonial residents. Built in 1894 during the French colonialism, the school grew to become a leading university in natural sciences. However, the school was shut down after France surrendered to Germany during World War II and that was the end of it...
The Japanese took over the Vietnam administration in the 1940's and the building was abandoned and left to crumble. This was the case until widely renowned American designer Bill Bensley came into the picture and transformed the ruins into a beautiful work of art in 2017.
So the fairytale goes…
Built to look just like a university campus with different buildings catered to different “departments’’ (eg. Biology), the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa truly stands out from its sister Marriott hotels.
With a fusion of French colonial architecture and Asian stylings on its walls, decor, and furniture, this place will give you goosebumps (the good kind!) the moment you step through its doors.
Plus, Phu Quoc is the only place in Vietnam that does not require a visa. Yes, you read that right. Tourists of all nationalities can stay in Phu Quoc for a 30-day period, provided:
You are traveling to the island by air/ sea;
You are not visiting other parts of Vietnam during the 30-day period; and
You are traveling from an international country to Phu Quoc (this applies to direct, indirect and layover flights) and Phu Quoc is your last stop.

Not convinced? Here are 5 reasons why this fairytale-inspired hotel is the perfect wedding venue.
Located in the south of Vietnam at Phu Quoc Island, JW Marriott Phu Quoc is great if you’re looking for isolation, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Built along the white sands of Khem Beach, the hotel is designed to look like a village and provides the privacy and serenity that you need.
You can board a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island and it will take less than an hour. From the Phu Quoc International Airport, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes by car to reach the resort.
Built to look just like a village, JW Marriott Phu Quoc comes equipped with retail shops and oriental lantern-lit streets.
If you are someone who appreciates culture, you’ll love the fusion of European and Asian designs. TheHoi An houses on the street (also called Rue De Lamarck) are examples of this.
As you are traipsing along the streets, you’ll see a lot of pastel yellow and blue houses with balconies — a design which came as a result of the French colonialism. The red tiles used for roofing indicate its Chinese influence.
You’ll also see hints of the Vietnamese culture dotted all over the place. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback dog for example — a rare dog breed that can only be found in Phu Quoc island — can be seen in ornaments, paintings and even as statues. These hunting dogs are a pride of the island and are famous for their intelligence.
Marked by different colours, the different buildings in JW Marriott Phu Quoc come with their own personality to depict the various “university departments”.
If you happen to stumble upon the “PE department”, you'll discover that it’s actually a gym. They’ve also converted the so-called Chemistry Lab into a bar which comes decorated with beakers, conical flasks, and test tubes! In fact, you’ll find chemical elements from the periodic table splattered all across the room and ceiling. Cool huh?
You’ll find that the beautiful hand-painted walls, stylish vintage decor, and elements of classroom amenities are what give the rooms a regal feel the moment you step in.
With 234 rooms in this resort, there is more than enough space for you and your guests to have a luxurious and comfortable stay.

If you’re a sea lover, you don’t have to traverse too far to view coral reefs. The JW Marriott Phu Quoc resort houses its own reef at the Marine Learning Centre. With the guidance of their own biologists, you can make a short swim to view the beautiful reefs nestled in the waters.
Also, who can forget the resort's signature villa with a 50m infinity pool? It is deemed to be the longest pool in a presidential suite in Asia.
Looking for an intimate beach set-up? Or perhaps you’re skeptical of the weather and would prefer something indoors?
Well, you have five options to choose from at JW Marriott Phu Quoc!

The manicured lawn and beautiful architectural backdrop is a great setting for an outdoor wedding. This vast race track gives couples the room to customise their wedding and can hold up to 400 guests.
If you’re looking for a quiet and secluded place to celebrate your special day, this is the place. It’s pink-coloured walls give the place a touch of softness and romance that will make your day even more special.
Perhaps none of the above struck a chord with you? Well, all you have to do is tell the resort what you want (eg. a wedding by the famous seashell-shaped pool/ in a secret tower) and they’ll make it happen!
