Hitchbird Exclusive: Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort

Hitchbird was lucky to get a chance to have quick chat with the resort’s General Manager, Lutz Mueller. We got an update on how the destination wedding industry is going in the popular Thai island of Koh Samui.

Let’s begin with a quick introduction - could you please let our readers know a little about yourself and your past working experience?

What makes Anantara Bophut a special destination for wedding goers and wedding couples?

The Anantara brand was developed 16 years ago in Thailand so it has elements of Thai culture in both its look and feel. The word Anantara means “without end” in the Sanskrit dialect, and it offers the full Thai hospitality experience. One of the resort’s unique features is that if anyone were to make their way from any neighboring countries to celebrate their wedding in Thailand, you will be doing it here in a very Thai place, and the celebration will have a that Thai look and feel.I think it makes sense that if you were to make a trip all the way to Thailand, you also have that connection to the place where you stay and celebrate your wedding and that’s very much the case here at Anantara Bophut.

Going in to more detail about Anantara Bophut specifically, we understand that you have a total of 106 rooms along with a beautiful pool and beach facilities. However, one of the things that has been famous for the Anantara brand has been their award-winning spas. Can you tell us a little more about your spa facility here?

I think the spa is really one of the “WOW experiences” here at the resort and if you look at the various reviews about Anantara Bophut within the media, a lot of times that’s one highlights mentioned by guests because of the location, quality and the experience of it. Combined now with weddings, our Spa Garden is also a possible wedding location. The garden design is one of the signatures we worked with Bill Bensley - one of the most acclaimed landscape designers in the Asia/Pacific region. Therefore, besides the beach that you mentioned, we also have 2 different garden locations which can accommodate a wedding celebration, plus a ballroom which in case an indoor venue is preferred due to weather conditions, we can still cater up to 100 people there.

Finally, the wedding couples that you’ve catered for here, where do they mostly come from?

We have a good mix but the majority is still from Australia. We also see wedding couples from Europe and UK and also from neighboring Asian countries, predominantly HK, Singapore and we’ve just received our first one from Mainland China. We’ve also done Indian weddings as well however it’s always a capacity question that we are faced with. Normally with Indian weddings, we’re looking at a buy-out but then we obviously need these enquiries well ahead of time to accommodate it and make sure we have no other clashing events.
