You know that meme that pops up every now and then? The one with a crudely drawn cartoon girl lamenting "I want to go to Hogwarts!" or "I want to go to Camp Half-Blood" in different panels. The last one usually features a fan of a particularly violent franchise, like Game of Thrones or The Hunger Games, saying, "Nah, I'm good."

The Lord of the Rings's The Shire is a particularly fan favourite fictional destination. It's where our heroes—Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin—broke bread and led normal lives until adventure called in the form of the bearded Gandalf. After tromping all over Middle-earth, they return home, full circle, and win possession of the One Ring right on Frodo's doorstep.

Which is why I'm so excited to present these gorgeous pre-wedding photos taken on the actual movie set of The Shire. Aptly called Hobbiton and located in Matamata—a quiet rural town that's a 2-hour drive from Auckland—the gently rolling hills are as spring-green as on the big screen and are still home to several quaint hobbit holes.
