Your First Set of Attier Pearls

Like snowflakes, no two pearls are exactly alike in appearance. They come from different grains of sand, different oysters. Choosing the right pearls is like choosing your dress—it needs careful consideration.

We put together five factors to help with deciding:

1. Luster
Luster is the inherent shine pearls produce due to its layers of calcium carbonate crystal—also called nacre. The larger the pearl, the shiner it is due to its numerous layers.

Are larger pearls better then? It depends on the dress. Fatter pearls may not always match.

2. Surface Perfection
The layers of nacre don't always set properly during the forming process. Spots and bubbles might appear on the surface. High-quality pearls are those with surfaces as smooth as a well-made bed.

3. Shape
Sometimes the layers don't form properly; sometimes the shape doesn't turn out right. They may be oval or an asymmetrical spherical shape. Round pearls are the best and rarest ones.

4. Color
Pearls come in a range of colors: good old-fashioned white, or silver, cream, pink, yellow, and black. A pearl can also have a tinge of secondary color, like examining a white pearl strand in the light may reveal a faint yellow overtone.
What color to choose depends entirely on you and your wardrobe!

5. Size
Pearls can range from 3mm to a whopping 13mm in diameter. For instance, freshwater pearls usually sit comfortably in the middle at 6mm to 7mm. Whether you want a more delicate strand or a more glamorous one is up to you.

Pearl Care
Pearls are sensitive to acid, alkaline and extreme humidity. Always put them on last to avoid direct contact with cosmetics, hair spray or perfume. After a day of wearing those beauties, wipe them with a soft cloth to clean. Ultrasonic Cleanser should never be used on them.

Pearl Storage
Keep those pearl surfaces smooth and unscratched by storing them in a jewellery box when not in use.

Pearl Maintenance
Even with the upmost care, material and craftsmanship, small parts of jewellery may loosen over time. We recommend restringing pearl necklaces every year.
