Travel Light in Style for your Destination Wedding

Hitchbird Experts

Ruby Fung talks outfit choices and stylish suitcases for your plane-bound nuptials

When we plan destination weddings, our first thought is to travel light. For an event that, as we say, only happens once in a lifetime, we want to look good all the time. The destination is your backdrop and every moment could be a photo-op.

So the question is: how do we travel light and travel in style at the same time?

I used to think only sportswear brands carried a wide range of travel stuff, but it turns out there are loads of designer labels that offer travel-related products like Moncler (a clothing brand) and Globe Trotter (suitcases).

Globe Trotter is this vintage-inspired suitcase I'm obsessed with. The recent trend for suitcases is all over the place, mostly because of the onslaught of Rimowas leading people to look for different options. I, having studied in London, am a big fan of the British "Kingsman-Savile Row" style, also known as leather-strap suitcases. The newest Globe Trotter also has wheels, which is a big improvement over the old design since you could never carry them for long journeys. Presently, they're collaborating with Alexander McQueen to produce a punk-rock fantasy of a suitcase. It has a studded surface with a skull monogram lining on the inside, adding a rock n' roll vibe to the traditional leather suitcase. It offers a silent statement: "Style Never Dies."

As for Moncler, I adore it because they strike a really good balance between practicality and fashion. They even invited Giambattista Valli to do a high-end collection with them. All the delicate fabric and exotic materials really brought Moncler to another level.

Plus, their bestselling Down Jacket is an awesome example of gorgeous, detailed design with a brilliant slimming function. To be honest, I'm usually biased against down jackets. They make me look sooooo fat and are just plain dorky. But Moncler genuinely impressed me with the way they played around with the cutting of the jacket and the idea of mixing functionality with everyday style—which looks super trendy. The double-breasted wool coat along with a removable lightweight vest inside keeps you warm while showing off your curves. Their cute twill army jacket (felt-padded on the inside) also goes with almost anything. You can easily create more than one outfit using the same jacket.

That's what I call travelling light in style.
